Precision Machining Services
Federal Gear and Machine’s CNC machining services provide a cost-effective solution for producing unique high precision components with intricate shapes and designs. Utilizing 2, 3, 4 and 5 axis machines, Federal Gear has the equipment and expertise to manufacture the most complex parts to extremely tight tolerances. Our state-of-the-art in-house 3D modeling and CAM programming ensure exacting quality and reduced lead times.
CNC Turning
Federal Gear and Machine is able to turn small parts, 1” OD or less and larger parts up to 40” OD as well as shafts up to 80” in length.
CNC turning is a machining process performed by a lathe to create cylindrical or round parts like shafts and gear blanks. The lathe spins the workpiece and engages a cutting tool to selectively remove material. In a simple 2 axis lathe, the tools remove material to a precise depth and width. 4 and 5 axis lathes or “Mill/Turn” machines use live tooling in the lathe to create features traditionally done in a mill, combining operations, and shortening lead times.
CNC Milling
Federal Gear and Machine has a wide range of CNC milling capabilities allowing us to produce small parts with simple and complex features.
CNC milling is used to selectively remove material or add features to a semifinished part. Milling uses rotating cutters to remove material from a stationary part, unlike turning operations where the material spins, but the tool does not.
Wire EDM
Federal Gear and Machine’s wire EDM services ensure manufacturability and repeatability for complex parts made from some of the hardest conductive materials.
Wire EDM uses a thin electrified wire to “cut” any type of conductive material. It is designed to cut complex shapes with extremely close tolerances and high surface finish requirements. The EDM machine uses a CAD model to precisely guide the wire through its cutting path, making it a perfect solution for complex medical, aerospace, firearms and prototypes that are not conducive to traditional machining. EDM works well on harden parts where tolerances are critical because it does not distort the parts.
Grinding
Federal Gear and Machine is able to surface grind or ID/OD grind to ensure your parts meet the most demanding tolerances.
Grinding is required when conventional machining methods do not produce the required tolerance or surface finish requirements. It removes small amounts of material from round or flat surfaces and is typically utilized at the end of manufacturing to provide the final precision requirements.
