How Gears Change Speed and Force to Keep Vehicles Moving

How Gears Work: The Basics

Let’s start with a basic understanding of how gears work. In a machine, gears are designed to transmit power from one section of the machine to another. Gears of different shapes and sizes are capable of transmitting this power in different ways. For example, if you connect your first gear to a smaller gear, the smaller gear will have to turn faster so it can keep up, thereby increasing speed. If you connect your first gear to a bigger gear, you’ll decrease speed, but increase the total force applied. Plus, meshing gears reverse the direction of the rotation of the system.

Speed and Force: Gearboxes in Cars

Car engines work by utilizing the energy in gasoline. When combusting this fuel, the pistons within the cylinders of the engine pump up and down at high speeds—at least 1,000 rpm, even when you’re at a standstill. But consider this—if your tires were spinning at 1,000 rpm, you’d be going 75 mph down the road!

Gearboxes transmit this power appropriately, depending on the needs of the car. When a car is standing still, it needs lots of force to get moving, and can do fine at a lower speed, so gears are used to transmit lots of force, but limited speed. When you shift to higher gears, the car is already moving quickly, so it doesn’t need much force to keep going; it just needs speed. Here, the gears focus on transmitting speed instead of force.
